Internet Coaches Series~4

I debated on whether or not to include this in my series on Internet Coaches, but I decided to include it because this is an email I just received from, The Mentors Club.  I recently joined The Mentors Club, because I am finding it more and more difficult to stay on the positive track when surround with people who are not positive.  Sometimes no matter how hard we try, we find that life puts us in close proximity with people who are not benefitting us as far as our positive growth goes.

Does this ever happen to you?  How do you handle adversity?  Should we look for the following traits in more people that we spend a lot of our time with?

The following is a section from the book Think and Grow Rich that I keep writing about in this blog.  Isn’t is amazing how your thoughts do get validated this way?  I have been looking over my copy since I uploaded it to this blog, and now I get an email with some great quotes from it from the same book and they tie into this series.

Here is the quote that I received.  (This quote came from Chapter 7 that was about “Organized Planning:  The Crystallization of Desire Into Action: The Sixth Step Toward Riches”.  Once again from Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich.)

Should we apply these attributes to Internet Coaches?  Maybe we should apply them to any coaches.

THE MAJOR ATTRIBUTES OF LEADERSHIP

The following are important factors of leadership:-

1. UNWAVERING COURAGE based upon knowledge of self, and of one’s occupation. No follower wishes to be dominated by a leader who lacks self-confidence and courage. No intelligent follower will be dominated by such a leader very long.

2. SELF-CONTROL. The man who cannot control himself, can never control others. Self-control sets a mighty example for one’s followers, which the more intelligent will emulate.

3. A KEEN SENSE OF JUSTICE. Without a sense of fairness and justice, no leader can command and retain the respect of his followers.

4. DEFINITENESS OF DECISION. The man who wavers in his decisions, shows that he is not sure of himself. He cannot lead others successfully.

5. DEFINITENESS OF PLANS. The successful leader must plan his work, and work his plan. A leader who moves by guesswork, without practical, definite plans, is comparable to a ship without a rudder. Sooner or later he will land on the rocks.

6. THE HABIT OF DOING MORE THAN PAID FOR. One of the penalties of leadership is the necessity of willingness, upon the part of the leader, to do more than he requires of his followers.

7. A PLEASING PERSONALITY. No slovenly, careless person can become a successful leader. Leadership calls for respect. Followers will not respect a leader who does not grade high on all of the factors of a Pleasing Personality.

8. SYMPATHY AND UNDERSTANDING. The successful leader must be in sympathy with his followers. Moreover, he must understand them and their problems.

9. MASTERY OF DETAIL. Successful leadership calls for mastery of
details of the leader’s position.

10. WILLINGNESS TO ASSUME FULL RESPONSIBILITY. The successful leader must be willing to assume responsibility for the mistakes and the shortcomings of his followers. If he tries to shift this responsibility, he will not remain the leader. If one of his followers makes a mistake, and shows himself incompetent, the leader must consider that it is he who failed.

11. COOPERATION. The successful leader must understand, and apply the principle of cooperative effort and be able to induce his followers to do the same. Leadership calls for POWER, and power calls for COOPERATION.

When you are looking for mentors and coaches make sure they have the characteristics that you want to copy.

  1. I find that it’s sometimes difficult to stay away from negative people. You’ll always find someone in your circle of friends and business associates that will always find that the cup is half empty instead of half full. It’s how we deal with these negative vibes that matters. I try not to get involved in their negativity – change the subject or just walk away for awhile.
I enjoy reading your blog as it always has a great message.
I love #6 “THE HABIT OF DOING MORE THAN PAID FOR” I think you’ll find that the best Mentors/Coaches out there love to give more that expected.

  2. Hello Luca,
Yes I am on Twitter and can be followed at Rocquesbiz on Twitter
I agree with #6, too. I always value the money people spend when they either buy a book from me, or spend an hour of their day listening to my coaching class on blogs.
Therefore I spend a lot of time preparing my class, and staying current with what is new in blogging.
The internet does not stand still as we all know. We have to be aware of the trends and when we are seeking out coaches we need to find coaches who are hands on with their involvement in what they coach.
Thanks for all of your kind comments.

  3. I agree with those who are picking up Think and Grow Rich again and rereading it. Excellent book, and each time you read it you pick up something new. Perhaps as you develop you become more open to things you had just glossed over the last time you read the book.

  4. It seems that leadership is more than what several people bargain for when they step into that sort of position. If someone becomes a leader for the fame, glory, and money, they are soon disillusioned (if they are doing it right). If you can not be a good servant then being a leader will almost be impossible.

Think of the good leaders you have known in your life. Did they spend time with you, and listen to your needs and problem solve with you, or were they just a boss?
The good leaders know how to serve their followers. I work in education where some of the leaders have never experienced life outside of the educational institution.

By the time they become a leader, they are so ingrained in the teacher bully mentality that several of them have (education by threat tactics….maybe another series..) the necessary skills to lead their peers, and treat them as they would students. Teachers can use the same training, too. Most students are wise to the limitations that teachers have in the “education by threat” area. They know what it takes to get suspended and that is a whole lot. However they know how to work the system.

The teachers, on the other hand, have to find out what it takes to stay employed, and that sometimes means working for the “boss” instead of the leader. Even tenured teachers face layoffs now with the current surplus of teachers in some states and the budget cuts. Teachers who work in non-union, nontenured positions, or people in other employed areas can probably relate to this.

That is why everyone should have a Plan B for their life and see another skill ( I recommend self employment) to get them through or to even change a career.

I think everyone who aspires to be a leader should have a mandatory reading of Think and Grow Rich. It would give the leaders a new perspective on the staff as a mastermind group working together for a common goal.

  5. You are absolutely right! It is very difficult to be positive when there are so many negative minded people surrounding you. Currently I am facing this problem heavily. So many people lough at me because I started my online activities. Keep on posting these types of post. Though there are so many negative minded people out there, some are also there like you who inspired others. Thanks a lot Rocque.
